“Some day I’m not going to be here. People may want to ask a question (about local farm history) and I won’t be around to tell them. There’s a lot of stuff in my memory that isn’t in anybody else’s.”
Bryce E. Coggins
Author and Poet
Lifetime Rusk County Wisconsin Farmer Bryce Coggins, was diagnosed with cancer in 1992.
After selling his cows and finding more time on his hands, he began to put his lifetime experiences to paper by way of many short stories.
His membership in the local writers club gave him motivation to write his stories, many of which were published in various forms.
Upon his death in 2019, members of his family began to gather his stories into a collection that could be published. From the Farmer’s Pen is the result of that effort.

[Bryce is] A local farmer and writer who uses his skill with words, remarkable memory and love for our area to present an entertaining and accurate picture of life in rural Rusk County as he has experienced it for almost a century

The stories in the collection
range from life on the farm, logging camps, school days, and the county fair to poetry, good, old family life and a lot of interesting neighbors. Bryce also wrote of how his family came to Rusk County around the turn of the twentieth century to carve a farm out of cut-over northern Wisconsin forest land.
